Weekly Worship at DUUF
Each Sunday at 10 am, DUUF gathers for a service that cultivates spiritual awareness, inspires reflection, and builds community. People may attend in person at 1111 Cordell, Denton, Texas, 76201, via Zoom, or on YouTube.
Themes for Reflection
In worship, small groups, and our programs for children and youth, we reflect on monthly themes from the Soul Matters Sharing Circle, a network of Unitarian Universalist congregations that supports guided explorations of UU values. In December, 2025, the theme is Choosing Hope.
How We Worship
In many ways, worship at Denton Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is rooted in Western religious traditions. Many first-time visitors notice that our services are similar to Christian services, featuring structured readings interspersed with music. In other ways, worship at DUUF is modern. Selected readings draw from eclectic sources honored by Unitarian Universalism and speakers share wisdom learned from their own spiritual paths.
Like our forebears, we respect the free pulpit, granting our speakers the room to let their spirits take voice. While Unitarian Universalism ordains ministers, we also honor the prophetic words and deeds of people from a variety of backgrounds and faiths. We also respect the free pew, meaning that we honor each person’s right to follow one’s own conscience and to take what one can use in one’s own life, following the prompting of one’s heart.
Our worship services typically last about an hour and include a chalice lighting, readings, music, and a reflection by our worship leader. A prayer or meditation is offered each week. In the Unitarian Universalist tradition, attendees respond in a variety of ways to prayer. Some close their eyes and bow their heads, others do not. Some pray to God, others use words that are meaningful to them, including Spirit, Universe, or Love. We know that we are a stronger community through our spiritual diversity, and we welcome seekers.
Our sanctuary offers an intimate experience, and in keeping with our eclectic style, most attendees dress casually or in business casual clothing. Children wear everything from shorts to their favorite superhero costume! We are a Welcoming Congregation, which means that we welcome people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.
Unitarian Universalists sometimes jokingly say that the goal of Sunday worship is to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable. We strive to instill in the worship experience the essence of our liberal religion, often raising a call to justice and a recognition of our conscience, creating a sense of hope, freedom and authentic spiritual connection.
